small ham shank or a slice of Cook's Sliced Ham

1 large onion, finely chopped

garlic (optional)

Procedure/Direction:
In a large pot, combine ingredients.Simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring
occasionally.
Shred ham off the bone and cook for another 2 hours.
Add water to desired consistency.
